Interaction Laboratories receives a Maryland Technology Transfer Grant from TEDCO to partner with the IRC in developing new applications and uses for a Leg Joystick Interface.

History Professor Anne Sarah Rubin is awarded the ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowship for her proposed project, Through the Heart of Dixie, Sherman’s March and America. The IRC will be collaborating with Professor Rubin and creating the visualizations.

The Economist Magazine, London England, posts an animation of the George W. Bush caricature on its website to launch a new repository of Kevin “KAL” Kallaugher’s political cartoons. The animation was produced in the IRC using the recently developed digital puppet of Bush.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) performs “Shout” for a month long series at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The performance includes the projected synchronous animation by the IRC Fellows and Professor Eric Dyer. The Zoetropes used for the animation and created by the IRC Fellows will be showcased in the Meyerhoff Lobby along with demonstrations as to how they were digitally animated.

A pilot test of virtually connecting K-16 teachers to active scientists is conducted using an Internet2 connection between the IRC and the Franklin Institute Museum of Science in Philadelphia. Professor Jeff Halverson, a hurricane scientist with JCET at UMBC, worked remotely with a group of educators at the Franklin Museum. High definition visualizations based on new models of developing hurricanes were streamed live as Professor Halverson explained the process. Discussions between the educators and Professor Halverson about the material happened in real-time throughout the workshop.
