Janet Echelman workshops a new project with the Imaging Research Center

Renowned public artist Janet Echelman visits UMBC on September 14 for a collaborative workshop at the Imaging Research Center and a public talk in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
Working at the intersection of sculpture, material science, engineering, and digital media, internationally acclaimed artist Janet Echelman will join IRC leadership—Director Lisa Moren, Technical Director Ryan Zuber, and Assistant June Young—for a hands-on collaborative workshop. Known for her large-scale, fluid public installations that defy traditional artistic categorization, Echelman will work directly with IRC staff to develop a new creative project centered around Puerto Rico’s historic Arecibo Radio Satellite.
Using Nobel Prize-winning pulsar data from the Arecibo Space Telescope, The IRC created a unique app for Janet Echelman and students to workshop and generate wave-like animations resembling Echelman’s sculptures. Throughout the session, workshop participants will work directly with this pulsar data, using computational and media tools to construct their own animated visual inspirations alongside Echelman.
