Education

Education is half of the IRC’s mission. In addition to conducting research projects specifically intended to expand our understanding of what educational and informational media can be, undergraduate and graduate students work with faculty and staff on every phase of that research. In the process they have transformative and informative experiences that complement the classwork they do to earn their degrees. The projects are almost always collaborative and interdisciplinary—often integrating arts and humanities with the sciences, and they address authentic challenges with the intention to have impact in the world. As a result, students sense that they are part of something bigger than themselves and even the university. Students are included in discussions about how projects will be developed from the moment they join the center. They grow their capacities for creativity and expand their knowledge, skills, and abilities and develop portfolios that them more competitive in the job market and educational opportunities. Over the past three decades hundreds of undergraduates and graduate students from a very wide range of arts, humanities, and science disciplines have participated.
